The De Crussol d’Uzès family own the castle (Le Duché d’Uzès) in the town center and have been living there, on and off, for more than 1,000 years. That may be why this village perché, on a high plateau overlooking the Vallon de l’Alzon, preserves so much of its past in such good condition.
The castle, although a private home, can be visited. In addition, there are a 12th-century clock tower, a mostly 18th-century church (St. Etienne) with a 13th-century square tower and
several 16th- and 17th-century mansions. The curious Tour Fenestrelle (roughly, tower of windows) is the only circular Romanesque tower in France.
